O.R. efficiency

Fast and simple preparation facilitates more surgical procedures and results in reduced stress

The department of Urologic surgery at Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark performs more robot-assisted operations without any additional staff resources, with the help of ProcedurePak® trays.

Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby has been named Denmark’s best hospital for the fourth year running and in 2000, the department of urologic surgery was first in the country to offer robot-assisted urological surgeries. These operations were initiated without any additional staff resources – obviously a major challenge for the department’s management, who had to optimise existing staff resources.

When Margrethe Willumsen became Head Nurse of the department in 2005, she immediately saw an opportunity to optimise working procedures in the operating room, thereby addressing the resource problem. In her opinion, introducing ProcedurePak trays, which she used in her previous job, would make surgical procedures both easier and faster. This turned out to be the case and the department can now perform more robot-assisted surgeries than before, without additional resources or extra staff time.

For Aarhus University Hospital, ProcedurePak trays have enabled faster patient preparation, simpler and more efficient surgical set-up, and shorter transition periods between operations. In addition, their patients are spending less time in the O.R., the surgeons’ time is being used more efficiently and the working environment is less stressful on the whole for the surgical staff.

“Previously, three people spent 45 minutes preparing the robot-assisted operations. Today, two people do this in 30 minutes.”

Grethe Skodborg, Specialist Nurse, Department of Urinary Surgery

“With the ProcedurePak trays, we have less stress, contamination risk and far less paper waste in the operating rooms.”

Nancy Hede Guldmann, Product Manager, Department of Urinary Surgery
