Diabetic foot ulcer

Correct footwear

By: Mölnlycke Health Care, December 16 2011Posted in: Diabetic foot ulcer

For diabetics, ill-fitting shoes that rub or pinch the feet excessively can lead to ulceration and foot injury because a diabetic individual who has sensory loss may not feel the injury until it is too late. Equally the person who has a foot that is not well perfused may have skin that is damaged by normally innocuous pressure resulting in ulceration.

Properly fitted shoes are very important in preventing such injuries. For people with no foot deformity normal commercial footwear that is has a wide toe box and adequate depth in conjunction with a lace/buckle or similar. For people with a foot deformity who require extra depth and width there are companies specializing in pedorthics, the design of footwear and specialty insoles to help alleviate and/or prevent foot pain and injury, manufacture special shoes and insoles.
