Symposium summary: Exudate management using a gelling fibre dressing
A symposium held at the Foot in Diabetes UK conference (November 2014) outlined the role of excessive wound exudate in the healing process of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). This article summarizes the proceedings and describes how the effective absorption and retention of exudate using Exufiber® gelling fibre dressing may aid in the promotion of healing.
The article highlights the role of exudate in wound healing (the maintenance of a moist wound environment) and the problems that can arise as a result of a wound overproducing exudate. Exudate amount and composition depends on wound aetiology, wound healing stage, underlying pathology and wound environment. Healing is largely determined by a balance of these factors, and chronic wounds often produce higher levels of exudate because the inflammatory phase of healing is prolonged. In these cases, exudate-level management is key to preventing skin damage or wound enlargement.
Based on the findings discussed in the article, DFU care should include strategies to ensure that excessive exudate is managed optimally to prevent exudate-related problems while maintaining a moist wound environment to promote healing.
