Mölnlycke Health Care would like to take this opportunity to highlight the work that perioperative nurses do each and every day all over the world. It is because of the hard work and dedication to compassionate care that perioperative nurses bring to work each day that operating rooms and hospitals are able to function.
Perioperative nurses: A reason to celebrate
The first Perioperative Nursing Day was celebrated in 2006 with the aim of highlighting the importance of the perioperative nursing profession at the same time as raising its profile. From the first year, an annual theme has guided the activities undertaken in conjunction with the holiday.
For 2013, the European Operating Room Nurses Association (EORNA) decided to honour nurses by adopting the broad theme, "Perioperative nursing: A humane profession". This theme encourages a more holistic approach to celebrating the contributions of perioperative nurses.
The perioperative nurse's role
Perioperative nurses are among the unsung heroes of the surgical field, not least because of their key role as the main caregiver and primary human face for patients before, during and after surgery. While the day-to-day duties perioperative nurses are expected to perform vary widely – making their role exceptionally challenging and demanding – one core role that goes beyond assisting surgical teams in the operating room is ensuring the best standard of care and communication within the surgical team.
While the human aspect of the job never changes, with compassion and caring driving much of a perioperative nurse's work, the nursing profession and the working environment in the operating room is always changing. With the adoption of single-use materials, such as gowns and drapes and customised trays, and advances in surgical techniques and general improvements in technology, nurses have had to adapt to innovation and incorporate it into their overall approach to working in the operating room and with patients.
Mölnlycke Health Care cares about nurses
Mölnlycke Health Care has been working in the industry for many years, in large part in close collaboration with nurses. We recognise that their expertise, insight and hard-won experiential knowledge is valuable to the development of safer, more efficient products and processes for the operating room and for patient care as a whole. Nurses' input is an integral and valued part of our product development.
Mölnlycke Health Care wishes to join the greater health care community in saluting perioperative nurses for the compassionate care they provide. We look forward to continuing our work with nurses and supporting them in offering the best possible care patient care.
