SCARS

Most wounds heal and leave a scar but most of the scars are flat and pale. In some cases the scar is hypertrophic (raised) red and itchy. Wounds that have been problematic due to for example, infection, or burn wounds, may leave these kinds of scars. Some people, particularly those with dark skin, are more prone to scarring whether they have had a surgical wound, burn or other injury.

Types of scars

Scars are classed as hypertrophic or keloid. Keloid scars occur when the wound hasn’t healed in the normal way. Such scars appear raised, lumpy, hard, red, rope-like and itchy. They tend to be larger than the original area of injury. Hypertrophic scars appear light and ‘stretched’ across the original area of the wound.

What can you do?

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

As always, prevention is better than cure! Once the wound has healed, the area should be moisturised and a silicone gel dressing applied. For optimal results, the dressing should be worn 24 hours a day, although you should remove it once a day to inspect the area and attend to personal hygiene requirements.

Protect the scar from sunlight the first year.

Length of treatment

Treatment may take between three months and one year depending on the original wound and the condition of the scar when treatment began.

Existing scars can also be treated with the silicone gel dressing as long as it is still red or pink (i.e. not old and white).

FAQ about our solution

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can Mepiform make scars less visible?
Many years of experience in using different silicone dressings have proven that silicone makes a scar less visible. Mepiform is a self-adherent soft silicone dressing.

Which kind of scars can be treated?
Mepiform is designed for the prevention and/or the management of hypertrophic and keloid scars. Breasts, shoulders and earlobes are very sensitive areas where excessive formation of scars can arise.

Does the treatment hurt?
No. The soft silicone (Safetac® technology) adheres gently to the skin and therefore application or removal is completely painless.

How long will the treatment take?
This depends on the severity, size and shape of the scar. Best improvements can be seen on red scars. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform should be used for 3-6 months depending on the condition of the scar. Treatment should be repeated if the scar starts itching, turns red or rises above the surrounding skin. A keloid should be treated for at least one year.

Will the scar disappear?
Mepiform is used at hospitals worldwide and it is clinically proven to flatten, soften and fade red and raised hypertrophic scars and keloids. Mepiform gives considerable improvement to scars. Even if the scar remains, there will be less redness, itching and raised tissue.

Could I stay in the sun with Mepiform?
If you expose a new scar to the sun, you’ll run the risk of getting a discoloured scar, which can be avoided by protecting it. Mepiform has a UV protection factor of class 5, but please observe that this is not sufficient to offer total protection.

Any precautions?
Mepiform should be used on closed, healed wounds only. The skin should be dry when applying the dressing. If itching or discomfort occurs, remove Mepiform and study the packaging leaflet for advice.
