ABOUT SPRAINS AND STRAINS

What is a sprain?

A sprain is an injury to a ligament.  Ligaments provide stability to joints and bring bones together, but they can become damaged if they’re overstretched. The ligaments around the ankle are the most commonly injured. Sprain symptoms include:

  • Pain around the affected area
  • Being unable to use the joint normally or put weight on it
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation

What is a strain?

A muscle strain means the muscle fibres have been overstretched or torn.  Most muscle strains occur because the muscle has been stretched beyond its limits or been forced to contract too strongly.  A strain is sometimes called a ‘pulled muscle’. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the affected muscle
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

How do I know if I have a sprain or strain?

Strains and sprains can be confirmed by your GP, physiotherapist or a doctor at the Accident & Emergency department of your local hospital. If the pain is severe, or hasn’t improved within four days of self-treatment, always seek medical help.

Common causes

COMMON CAUSES

Playing sports, working in the garden, tackling jobs around the house or doing things repetitively can all cause sprains and strains.

Sport Injuries

Sprains and strains are a common problem in many different sports, particularly those involving running, jumping or rapid changes of direction. Tubigrip’s excellent bi-directional pressure helps to reduce swelling and offers consistent support to the damaged tissue during exercise.

Gardening and DIY injuries

Every year, thousands of people get injured as a result of DIY and gardening.  Some tasks may be strenuous and can exercise muscles that haven’t been used for a long time. Injuries can also occur from falling off ladders, slipping or tripping. Tubigrip supports the damaged tissue, while offering you complete freedom of movement.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a general term used to describe pain caused to muscles, nerves and tendons by repetitive movement and overuse, such as working at a computer or manual work.  The condition mainly affects parts of the upper body, including the forearm, elbow, wrist, hands, neck and shoulders. Tubigrip can be worn for added support, but if you think you may be suffering from RSI it’s important to consult your doctor.

What can you do?

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

If you have a sprain or strain there are a number of things you can do to help manage the problem at home. Use the PRICE method to combat swelling and discomfort:

P = Protect from further injury
R = Rest the affected area and avoid activities that cause further pain
I = Ice or a cold compress should be applied to the affected area, to reduce swelling
C = Compress the affected area to reduce any present/future swelling.  Do this by putting gentle pressure on the area.  Protect the area by covering it with cotton wool and securing it with Tubigrip.
E = Elevate the affected area above the level of the heart, to reduce swelling

Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen), may be taken to reduce the pain, but always check with your doctor or health care professional first.
