How can Mepitac be lifted and adjusted without loss of adherent properties?
Mepitac features Safetac® technology. Safetac is a patented soft silicone adhesive technology. The soft silicone moves into the uneven area of the skin and adheres over a large area on the skin. On removal, no stripping of epidermal cells occurs. The soft silicone layer is therefore intact and still adherent. This in contrast to dressings with “traditional adhesives” where epidermal cells are being stripped of on removal blocks the adhesiveness.
Are there any sensitizing compounds in Mepitac?
Silicone is chemically inert and adverse effects are very rare.
How should Mepitac be stored?
According to normal storage routines. Mepitac can withstand normal variations in storage conditions (temperature, humidity, exposure to light).
What happens if Mepitac is stored in direct sunlight?
It becomes slightly discolored after a while. The discoloration will not affect the product properties.
Does Mepitac influence the skin pH?
Mepitac is neutral and is assumed not to change the pH of the skin.
Can Mepitac be sterilized by steam?
No.
Why may the adhesion of Mepitac decrease when used in humid conditions such as incubators or on patients who have a fever or perspire a lot?
This is not specific for Mepitac; other tapes may also get a decreased adhesion in these conditions. The adhesion may vary depending on skin type.
Is Mepitac a silicone gel product?
Yes, Mepitac is a tape with Safetac® technology. Safetac is a soft silicone adhesive technology and soft silicone equals silicone gel.
Can I keep Mepitac on 24 hours?
As long as the tape stays in place by itself and fixates whatever it is fixating it can remain in place (in most cases more than 24 hours).
What are the healing capabilities of Mepitac?
Since silicone is inert, it does not interact chemically with the wound or have any effect upon the cells responsible for the healing process. Furthermore, because soft silicone dressings are easily removed, they do not traumatize the wound or the surrounding skin and therefore do not interfere with wound healing.
Can I wash the tape and re-use it?
As long as Mepitac maintains its adhesive properties it can be re-used.
Can Mepitac be used to fixate endotrachial tubes?
Mepitac is not indicated for life supporting devices. (However, if used together with a complementary fixation device it may be used).
Can Mepitac be used for infants who are in an incubator?
Yes. However there have been a few cases when Mepitac has lost some of its tackiness due to high humidity in the incubator.
Why should Mepitac not be used to fixate life support devices?
The tackiness is not as strong as on the adhesives used for fixation of life supporting devices.
Can Mepitac be used over an IV site or subclavian line?
Recommendation: IV site – yes. Subclavian line - no.
Is Mepitac moisture proof?
Yes.
Why does the adhesion work better for some patients than others?
The patients own MVTR varies.
Can Mepitac be re-used/re-applied?
Yes.
