Although skin tears are perceived to be common among the frail and elderly, they are often left unreported or are considered minor injuries. However, recent studies show that misdiagnosed and mismanaged skin tears can lead to serious complications (such as pain and infection) and can even become chronic wounds. This results in unnecessary suffering for the patient, as well as increased costs for the healthcare system.
