The prospect of turning the operating room green sounds promising for sustainability. But in the face of greenwashing and challenges measuring green initiatives, it can be difficult to make ORs truly green and be able to demonstrate it factually.
The healthcare industry accounts for 4.4% of total carbon emissions in the developed world. If healthcare were a country, it would be the fifth largest carbon emitter globally. COVID-19 pushed healthcare systems to the limit, making sustainability endeavours a lower priority as exceptional challenges arose. Faced with what appears to be an uphill battle, what strategies can turn this trend around?
