Pressure Injury Treatment Advisory (PITA) Group

A practical framework for pressure injury assessment and treatment

Pressure injury management can be complex — particularly when assessment, staging and treatment decisions vary across clinicians and care settings.

The Australian Pressure Injury Treatment Advisory (PITA) Group developed a concise, clinician-friendly framework designed to support consistent, evidence-aligned pressure injury care at the bedside.

The PITA Quick Guide and integrated decision tools help clinicians assess with clarity, stage accurately and select appropriate treatments with confidence.

The PITA Quick Guide serves as a concise, actionable resource for clinicians, providing clear guidance on pressure injury staging, tissue assessment, exudate levels, infection indicators, and recommended treatment strategies.

Alongside the Quick Guide, the supplement includes the PITA Clinical Assessment Decision Tree, designed to support consistent evaluation and escalation based on diagnostic cues.

Also available in the same publication is the PITA Staging & Treatment Plan, a structured summary table that aligns staging categories with appropriate therapeutic interventions.

These integrated tools aim to streamline point‑of‑care decision making, reduce variability in practice, and reinforce evidence‑aligned treatment pathways

About the PITA Group

The Australian Pressure Injury Treatment Advisory (PITA) Group is a national collective of expert clinicians formed in 2021 to address a growing need for simplified, practical tools to support front line pressure injury assessment and treatment. The group brings together specialist nurses, nurse practitioners, educators, researchers and professors of nursing from across Australia, each with extensive clinical and academic experience in wound management.

Their work is framed around high quality evidence and international guideline alignment, while remaining clinician-friendly and applicable across acute, aged care, home care and community settings. The PITA Quick Guide was formally published as a supplement by Wounds International and supported by Mölnlycke Health Care, ensuring broad accessibility and adherence to established guideline standard

Real‑World Application & Results

A follow‑up study published in the International Wound Journal in 20262 evaluated the feasibility of implementing PITA‑aligned assessment processes in clinical practice. The study explored practical considerations such as clinical workflow integration, adherence to assessment protocols, recruitment feasibility for larger studies and clinician engagement.
